March 2016 IPS Eastern Branch Meeting
Guest Speaker: Paula Rafferty
Paula is an active member of the IPS (currently EQA - International Rep) and teaches many classes and workshops for European quilt shows, festivals and groups throughout the year. She is also the full-time art teacher with the Limerick Prison Service!
With a background in fashion design, textiles have always been an important part of her life. Paula twice participated in the Fashion Sans Frontiers fashion show at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, England (2011 and 2012) and has organised the IPS’s Gallery of Quilts at their yearly show – Knit & Stitch in Dublin, Ireland.
Her work with the Limerick Prison teaches arts and crafts to the prisoners as part of their education program and Paula incorporates quilting into this program as much as possible. As a member of the organizing committee for the National Prison Art Exhibition and, after receiving proper permission, Paula worked with the IPS to display some students’ pieces as part of a national exhibition, which started the Limerick Prisoners Quilt & Textile Exhibit. Quilts are never entered for prize money, as the prisoners may not profit from their art. Their quilts have been shown all over Ireland, the UK and Europe.
Paula is currently working on a new collaborative project involving her students and an amazing Hungarian felter. These pieces will be created and inspired by the famous painting The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things by Hieronymus Bosch, and the exhibit will tour internationally to New York, Paris and The Netherlands in 2016.
