Update: Monday 21st March 2016 – From Cynthia Keegan: Editorial Rep - To Branch Members:

It is important that our Eastern Branch be regularly represented in the quarterly newsletter of the Irish Patchwork Society.  So many events are organised in Branch, so many vibrant small groups meet in the eastern area, so many wonderful works are produced by members.  Yet we have a difficulty when it comes to sharing all these activities with a wider audience.

Your branch needs you!   Be a reporter......and don't worry about putting the words on paper (Anything can be tweaked!) Please, send in your ideas and reports at any time or speak to any committee member at our meetings if you can help as a reporter.

Articles of interest to members, reports of workshops, groups and meetings, quilter biographies, patchwork tips and hints, letters for the editor etc. are ALL of interest and should be sent to your editorial rep by email: editorial.ipseastern@gmail.com

Update: Monday 21st March 2016 - From Paula Rafferty (EQA Rep & IPS Member) -To all IPS Members

Fashion Show at the Festival of Quilts 2016 (originally posted on March 20, 2016 on Southern Branch IPS website)

Hi All, I have been asked to put together the fashion show again for the Festival of Quilts. The 2016 theme is: Wearable Art and Fabulous Fashion – Clothes can really be anything, but we do want new, not anything that has been seen at previous Festival of Quilt shows.

The show will be sponsored by The McCalls Pattern Company again but will be staged slightly differently than in 2015. We will be more focused on getting the garments on stage to good music, with some simple choreography and each scene will bebacked by screens with details of what is being shown rather than having lengthy commentary.

At this moment, Ineed to know whether you are interested and what sort of garment (s) you wish to propose. I am looking to put together a diverse, eclectic mix of classic, high fashion, wow factor and amazing! I will then need descriptive text and good, high resolution images to go in the colour brochure in due course.

Deadlines: 20 April – Confirm that you wish to participate and number/type of garments & 30 June – About 50 words of descriptive text and image– include fabrics, techniques and patterns used

ALSO please advise whether you wish to model the garments yourself, or provide them for us to show. NB If you wish to model them, you will be invited to a rehearsal on the morning of the Fashion Show to practice and get hair and make-up done. If making for our models, we will need garments that are size 10-12.

1st August– garments sent in advance OR (you can of course bring them to the show, please just let me know which).

I look forward to hearing from you – don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any queries, or if you know of anyone else who may be interested.

If any IPS Members are interested would they please contact Paula Rafferty by phone: 087- 7699200 or by email and she will forward interested parties details to the event organisers.

Update for 25th April 2015 :

Afternoon Demonstration/U.F.O. (written by Ann O'Brien)

On Sat April 25th thirteen ladies gathered following the monthly meeting with the hope of acquiring the skill of quilt as you go.  We had all arrived with the required scraps with some scraps being very well organised into separate colour-ways and some of the less organised among us just bringing bags of scraps.  Some other ladies had gathered to complete their UFOs.  The hall was filled with a lovely buzz of activity.  The quilt as you go was facilitated by Kathleen Nugent who shared with us her skills and also displayed a beautiful quilt completed using quilt as you go squares.  It was interesting to be encouraged not to worry too much about colour matching or seam allowance, despite this some fabulous squares were created and I suspect some creative colour matching was taking place.

A most enjoyable afternoon was had by all and everyone agreed that even the smallest of scraps will be useful and will end up contributing to beautiful masterpieces in the future. These afternoons are a great new initiative and a great opportunity for the apprentices to gain knowledge from the masters.

Update from April 2015:

Stained Glass Windows Class by Terri McNeill - Saturday 11th April 2015 (written by Sue Mulvihill)

The Eastern Branch of the Irish Patchwork Society hosted a day school on Saturday 11th April lead by Terri McNeill. Terri introduced the group to her method of stained glass style images. Once Terri had explained the technique, the group of 15 set to work. Once again Freezer paper and Bondaweb and fusible bias binding proved invaluable. One of the tips we learnt was to use grease proof paper to protect both iron and fabric from Bondaweb glue. Another useful tool was the purchase of a Teflon sheet oven liner which proved a superb tool for constructing the images.

Terri moved around the group guiding us to create glowing leaf patterns and providing useful tips and hints. By the end of the afternoon phrases such as “inspiring” and “very enjoyable”, were to be heard. We had all produced work that was both enjoyable and satisfying. Many thanks Terri.

Update from March 2015:

Barbara Weeks Workshop , Sunday 29thMarch 2015 (written by Sue Mulvihill)

The Eastern Branch of the IPS were very fortunate to have Barbara Weeks as their tutor for the Day Workshop on 29th March. Barbara is an internationally known textile artist and her work is to be found in both public and private collections. Under her experienced and enthusiastic guidance the 15 member group set about fragmenting an image to produce a piece of art. As beginners we could start with fish or pebbles shapes, but soon several members were branching out into landscapes. Barbara showed us how to use freezer paper to capture and manipulate images to produce our own art. Throughout the day, once it appeared that we had mastered one technique, Barbara would call us together to pass on more information on further mosaic techniques, machine quilting, finishing or presentation. Of particular interest was the collection of her own quilted pieces, which proved an inspiration for much of the work on that day. We could not have had a better tutor: Barbara opened a window of inspiration for us all.
